Top 10 Most Epic Beards in Movies

10. Jean-Claude Van Damme – In Hell

Year of film: 2003
If you have read a few posts on this site then you will be able to tell we are huge fans of Jean-Claude Van Damme and to our recollection and we would probably bet money on this, but this is the first time Van Damme has opted for a beard with long hair. I think you will also find that he definitely should have gone with this look more often in his prime.

9. Kevin Smith – Jay and Silent Bob

Year of film: 2001
The beard is kind of like a trademark for Kevin Smith and it seems wherever he goes the beard goes. The only thing different about him as Silent Bob in Jay and Silent Bob is the long hair he is rocking. He also directed and wrote the film too, something that not many people are aware of. If you have seen the guy without a beard you will agree that he looks totally weird. You would be like: “Whoa, bro, get the beard back!”

8. Robin Williams – Good Will Hunting

Year of Film: 1997
If this post was just called The Most Epic Beards of all Time, then Robin Williams from the Zelda advert would have been number 1 on our top 10 list. There must be something about getting to a certain age when you feel that you need to grow a beard and Robin Williams is at the stage – we just wished he started when he was much younger with his beard growing capability. Either that or he just misplaced his razor and he refused to buy a new one.

7. Chuck Norris – You Pick The Film

We could talk about this man’s beard all day, but instead we will leave you with some Chuck Norris beard facts:
  • Chuck Norris holds the Guinness World Record for the most Beard related killings.
  • Chuck Norris’s Beard has its own ZIP Code
  • Chuck Norris doesn’t shave; his beard grows to the perfect length and stops.
  • Chuck Norris’ beard is Razorwire, soaked in Oxen Blood and held together by the souls of mortals

6. Ian McKellen- The Lord of the Rings

Year of the film: 2001-2003
Told Gandalf, with his bushy eyebrows, long grey cloak, his pointed hat and his grey godlike beard, he is unmistakable for anyone else. Gandalf the Grey, later known as Gandalf the White (yeah, original we know) is over 2000 years old so he has had a fair bit of time you could say to grow his beard. Do you think for the first 1000 years he just grew the tash of a goatee? Be funny if he did.

5. Tom Hanks – Castaway

Year of film: 2000
The production of Castaway was halted for a year, so Tom Hanks was able to grow his beard; his other goal was also to lose some weight for the role. It’s always awesome to know that it’s actually a real beard in the film; it makes the film more epic now doesn’t it? The director Robert Zemeckis used the same crew members he used to film Castaway to also film the movie What Lies Beneath – now that was convenient wasn’t it?

4. Zach Galifianakis – The Hangover

Year of film: 2009 – 2013
Just like Kevin Smith, Zach Galifianakis’s beard is a permanent feature of his face…but you know what? He looks awesome! Not many people can grow a beard in real life as thick as his, so good on him. We would never shave if we could grow one like that. If you have seen the move The Hangover then you will know that Alan (Zach Galifianakis’s character) isn’t that sharpest knife in the box – which totally makes his character – but without the beard we reckon the movie wouldn’t have as big as it is.

3. Robbie Coltrane – Harry Potter

Year of film: 2001 – 2011
Now that’s a beard, and he has the hair to match. In fact, you’re not quite sure where his hair ends and his beard starts. Apparently Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane’s character in Harry Potter), not only got a fruit bat stuck in his beard during filming, but he also got a mini-fan caught too, which had to be cut out. And no, we don’t mean a midget who loves Harry Potter.

2. George Clooney – Syriana

Year of film: 2005
George Clooney injured his spine so bad in Syriana after a stunt didn’t go to plan that the actor considered taking his own life. Wow, that’s something you don’t expect to hear from a movie star is it? If it makes it better George, your beard when playing the character Bob Barnes was amazing and you should definitely keep it – unless of course it was a bad omen?

1. Al Pacino – Serpico

Al_Pacino_Beard_Serpico
Year of film: 1973
Yeah, that’s right, Al Pacino grew a beard back in 1973, probably before you were born or you were still in diapers. Did you know: Scenes from the movie Serpico had to be filmed in reverse order, with Al Pacino’s beard being cut for each scene to give the impression of progression in the film? Can you imagine if he had the same beard when filming Scarface? Tony Montana would have looked more badass than he did.
OK, OK, we know you will probably need a lay down after all this epic beardness as it can be a lot to take in. Just remember: If you can’t grow a beard just give it a few years and it will come. If it doesn’t, well, there is always the option of cross-dressing.
